Issues of Book Acquisition in University Libraries: A Case Study of Pakistan

This mixed methods study used a survey and interviews to explore acquisitions issues in university libraries in Pakistan. The study found that most respondents were still relying on local sources of material and that the emergence of a digital paradigm had not yet had a pervasive effect. While some libraries are purchasing online, most libraries are still having problems acquiring relevant material quickly, especially from foreign sources

Information Needs and Seeking Behavior of Science & Technology Teachers of the University of the Punjab, Lahore

The paper focuses on enquiring the information needs and Information seeking behavior of Science and Technology (S&T) teachers of the University of the Punjab (PU). Their preferences regarding various formats of information sources (printed and electronic) and importance of formal and informal sources have been explored through quantitative survey. Self-completion questionnaire was used to reach whole population of institutions/colleges/departments of all Science and Technology faculties. Findings reveal: both libraries and e-resources are playing important role in meeting respondents’ information needs; direct access to e-sources has slightly decreased the number of their visits to departmental and central libraries; and faculty spend comparatively more time on searching web sources than print sources

Towards s Digitization Framework: Pakistani Perspective

The study assessed the opinions of the Pakistani library experts in terms of: organization for digitization work (execution of digitization work & staffing patterns); funding patterns; and access patterns for digitization projects. The study opted qualitative research design and in - depth interviews were conducted to collect the data from purposely selected library experts from different parts of Pakistan. The findings bring forward an outline of digitization framework in t erms of execution of digitization work, staffing patterns, funding patterns and access patterns

Standardization And Sustainability Of Digitization Projects In University Libraries Of Pakistan

University libraries around the world are digitizing their information resources to offer online access to remote users.  However, digitization projects in developing countries face the challenges of standardization and sustainability. The purpose of this study was to assess the opinion of the library experts of Pakistan in terms of: Adoption of standards/best practices in digitization projects; Sustainability of digitization projects; Role of cooperation for digitization projects; HEC role in promoting digitization activities; and Ways to promote standardised digitization practices in university libraries of Pakistan. The study opted qualitative research design and 25 in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data. The findings revealed that respondents favoured to formulate and adopt the basic and broad standards for digitization. They considered that sustainability of digitization projects should be ensured by the operating institution while role of HEC and cooperation among operating institutions was considered important to ensure the sustainability of such projects as well as promote the standardised digitization practices in university libraries of Pakista

Attracting Prospective Students to Master’s Program: A Dilemma for Library and Information Science Education

This paper examines the issue and challenges of enticing promising students in library and information science (LIS) education in Pakistan. It also identifies the practical strategies in this regard by exploring the perceptions of faculty members. A questionnaire sent to heads of departments and semi-structured interviews with faculty were employed to collect data. The findings of the study identify social, physical, procedural, and behavioral hindrances to attracting brilliant students. The study revealed a need for fundamental changes by expanding intellectual jurisdiction, restructuring academic offerings, redesigning curriculum contents and revamping social image of the profession and professionals. The findings of the study may lead to better understanding of the phenomenon in Pakistan and other countries with a similar context

With the exponential growth and availability of digital reading contents, it is also a matter of concern that how readers interact with digital contents? And whether they are aware of features associated with electronic reading devices? The current study aims to examine the level of students’ digital information literacy skills and to understand the status of their interaction with digital contents.
